This is a question that we've discussed regularly around the design table over the years and the answers are as varied as the people we ask.
We want to hear from you what features you appreciate most with your cloth nappies and which ones, if any, you could really do without. Is there a feature you'd love on a diaper but haven't seen it commercially available yet?
To give you some ideas:
Do you prefer sized, 2-size or one size diapers and why?
Do you prefer a 2-step system (fitted with cover), or more of an AIO style?
Do you prefer snaps or Velcro type closures and why?
Do you prefer synthetic poly microfiber or do you prefer natural fabrics?
If you prefer natural fabrics, which ones do you prefer and why?
What is the most important factor in purchasing a diaper? Cost (per use), fit, style, colour, country of manufacture (including working conditions and pay of workers)?
We'd love to hear from you!
Of course, there is a reward for your wonderful input! We'll randomly draw a winner from all postings for a $25 GC at www.monkeydoodlez.com on Monday, April 5, 2010. Please be sure to let us know how to get in touch with you if you win!

I prefer an AIO or Pocket diaper style.
ReplyDeleteI have used sized and one-size diapers and like them both at different times of the day! Sized is less bulky and the fit is more precise but the one-size diaper is great because you buy one diaper and it lasts the entire diapering years.
I prefer velcro (except in the wash!) I'm sure if I had a diaper escape artist, I would prefer the snaps as they are harder to undo!
I prefer synthetic poly micorfibre as it pulls the moisture away from the skin.
Fit, colour and country of manufacture are all important to me (in that order.)
I prefer sized diapers. The fit is that much better, I have fewer blow-outs and my husband gets them on our daughter correctly every time. A one sized diaper has more margin for error in my experience. I have not yet tried a 2 size diaper.
ReplyDeleteI prefer AIO or fitted with cover diaper style. Fitted diapers also allow my daughter to have some ventilation time without a cover.
I find stuffing a bit of a pain and therefore don't like pockets as much. That being said I do like the Monkey Doodlez pocket diapers as they have a terry insert. I hate the feel of microfibre inserts.
I much prefer velcro for the adjustability of it, plus I feel I am going to tear out the snaps by accident when I am undoing a snapped diaper.
My daughter does much better with natural fibres - synthetic ones retain too much heat and she gets red. The Monkey Doodlez AIO's are great because they have the wicking action of synthetic fibres, but then the core is natural. My daughter does really well in this style of diaper.
Fit, style, cost, country of manufacture, colour in that order.
I really like the darker colours on the insides of the diapers. That way stains don't show up as much. I don't have a problem with stains, but when I take my daughter to daycare, I don't want them thinking the diapers aren't clean because they have a slight stain. Dark colour insides solve this problem.
What do I look for in a diaper?
ReplyDeleteI'm really new to the world of cloth diapers, and diapers in general. My little girl is just 4 1/2 months old. That said, I've changed thousands of diapers already (or at least it feels that way!)
We're doing a trial package right now of cloth and the MonkeyDoodlez one is one of my favourites of the mix. My other current favourite is Gro Baby.
What I like (not in order):
1. A good fit - I don't like worrying that my girl's thighs are being pinched or rubbing. Cloth is great for the softness of the fabric and not having any irritating plastics. But diapers need to be either adjustable in the leg area or big enough for her.
2. Softness/comfort. I love Pampers, but one of our biggest problems with the disposables is the chemical smell that comes off of them. It makes my husband nauseous.
3. Simplicity. I have found during this diaper trial that diapers with snaps drive me nuts and my daughter nuts. So velcro it is. Simplicity is also a must to get my husband on board with switching to cloth and investing in cloth.
4. Fabric used: Goes along with comfort. My daughter has very sensitive skin and I don't want her to overheat or chafe or have issues with polyesters. It's also important that the fabric can stand up to lots of use and wear and tear and wick moisture away.
5. Bulk. I prefer slimmer fitting diapers.
So far I prefer sized diapers. I don't like messing with changing up the rise, etc. I prefer AIO style or something easy like having a stuffer that's attached (like the new one you have - Tuck and Go) or fastens with snaps (Gro Baby)
Factors in order of importance for purchasing a diaper:
Up til now: Cost
Now: Comfort and fit, cost, style/colour, country of manufacture.
Style/Colour can influence me though, like any consumer. :)
